Ancient Technology

Since Southern Man is a techno geek and also teaches astronomy from time to time, he finds the so-called Antikythera Mechanism - a two-thousand-year-old astronomical calculator - to be extremely cool. Here's a video of a working model of the device demonstrated by the man who constructed it.

Milestones

Southern Man imagines that in many families it is something of a bittersweet milestone when the first of your offspring spread their wings and leave the nest to make their way in the world. Not so in the case of his unemployed, dropout (well, expelled), substance-abusing teenage son, who has been evicted from his new apartment and as of tonight is, for all practical purposes, living on the street. Southern Man and his ex helped him pack, and without going into details let's just say that it was not a happy time for anyone.
